My research group develops and applies linear and non-linear optical diagnostic techniques to solve problems in thermofluids including heat transfer, mixing and combustion. We have the tools to make highly precise and accurate measurements of temperature, flow fields, pressure and species concentrations with both spatial and temporal resolution. We work closely with the engines group and are developing links with colleagues in turbomachinery. We have experience ranging from understanding the photophysics of laser interactions with molecules through characterising nanoparticle formation in turbulent jets to measuring the in-cylinder temperature of an internal combustion engine.
