Professor Peter Norrey’s research focusses on inertial fusion science, high-energy density laser–plasma interactions, and extreme field physics. He leads experimental, theoretical, and computational programmes aiming to compress fusion fuel via ultra-intense lasers and to overcome the energy barriers to ignition. His work also explores novel laser- and beam-driven particle accelerators, ultra-bright X-ray sources, and energy transport of fast electrons in dense plasmas. Norreys’ group combines modelling, diagnostics, and experiments to reduce drive energy requirements and make controlled fusion more feasible.
