Doug Higgs

Professor Doug Higgs' research focuses on how mammalian genes are regulated during development and differentiation, especially in the context of erythropoiesis (red-blood-cell formation). He uses the globin gene clusters (e.g. α-globin) as model systems to dissect cis-regulatory elements such as enhancers, promoters, insulators, and how they interact via chromatin conformation and nuclear architecture. His lab combines genomics, imaging, genome editing and computational approaches, and works toward translating insights into therapies for blood disorders like thalassemia
